Scholarships for International Students in Sweden

The Sweden Government offers scholarships and financial grants to the international students to take up their higher education in Sweden. The scholarships and grants are provided to help them to surmount the financial crunch they might face during their study period in Sweden. Every year more than 500 scholarships are given to Students and researchers from across the globe, coming to Sweden to take up higher education.

General Eligibility Criteria

To get an Educational Scholarship of any form/kind in Sweden, students should possess a sound academic record. The curriculum vitae (CV) of the student have to be outstanding with decent job experience or proof of involvement in extracurricular activities.

Swedish Institute Scholarship Programmes

The Swedish Institute-SI, a government agency, offers scholarships to international students who wish to take up a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree programme at Sweden Universities, as well as to researchers coming to Sweden. The scholarship covers both living expenses and tuition fees. Nearly 120 Swedish Institute scholarships are provided every year.

Swedish Universities Scholarships

Universities provide many different scholarship programmes for international students to help cover tuition fees or living expenses. Students should contact the individual university they are interested in, to know more about the University scholarships offered and other details.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships 

The EU’s Erasmus Mundus Programme grants scholarships to non-European students attending programmes at the Swedish Universities. Ten Swedish Universities sponsor about 30 Erasmus Mundus supported programmes. The scholarship programme covers the living expenses, tuition fees, travelling costs and insurance costs of the students who are accepted into Erasmus Mundus supported programmes. The Erasmus Mundus programme finances student flexibility between universities inside and outside of Europe who take part in Erasmus Mundus pursuits: either Action 1, i.e. full Erasmus Mundus degree programmes or Action 2, i.e. university partnerships. Swedish universities are part of a broad range of programmes within both Action 1 and Action 2.

Bilateral Scholarships 

Currently, Sweden has bilateral exchange programmes with China and Japan. Bilateral Scholarships are granted to students from China or Japan, who come to Sweden for higher education studies, research, or training, in any academic area of study or field. 
The application procedure varies for each country. You need to contact the appropriate authority to know about the application procedure.  

Language Requirement: Proficient in Swedish or English

Scholarship Benefits: For Master’s degree programme, the scholarship amounts to SEK 9,000 per month, for PhD studies, it amounts to SEK 15,000 per month and SEK 18,000 for post-doctoral researchers. The scholarship covers the living costs of one person only.
