General Eligibility Conditions for Swedish Institute Scholarships

The scholarship is for students who are obliged to pay the tuition fee.

Students who have to pay the tuition fees are:
  • All citizens from non-EU/EEA countries and Switzerland, who study at a Swedish higher education institution, as well as do not possess any other type of residence permit in Sweden except a study residence permit will have to pay tuition and application  fees.
  • Formal exchange students and doctoral students do not need to pay the application and tuition fees. Students who are enrolled for a programme at a Swedish higher education institution at the time they give in their application need not pay the application fee.
There is no age limit for scholarship holders. The scholarship is not given to the student who has already resided in Sweden for two or more years foregoing to the duration of the scholarship, possess a Swedish or EU/ERA-nationality, permanent residence permit or work permit in Sweden, has earlier been granted a Swedish Institute-SI scholarship for master’s degree studies or research at a Swedish institutions, already has a qualification from a Swedish higher education institution, or is presently admitted in a course of study at a Swedish higher education institution.

Swedish Institute Scholarships for the Western Balkans

The scholarship is for full-time master’s degree studies in Sweden and includes both living costs and tuition fees.

Eligibility Criteria: The scholarship is for students who are required to pay the tuition fee.

Eligible Countries: The scholarship program is available to applicants from Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Serbia.

Courses of Study: Courses of study within the fields of social and environmental science are eligible. 

Scholarship Benefits: The scholarship covers both the study and living expenses that amounts to SEK 9,000 per month. Also, a travel grant of SEK 5,000 and an insurance coverage is given along with the scholarship. Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against sickness and accident during the scholarship period.

Scholarship Period: The scholarship is only awarded for programmes commencing in the autumn semester- August/September and is granted for one academic year.

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships

This scholarship is for students desiring to pursue full-time Master’s degree programme in Sweden. It covers both the study as well as living expenses. 

Eligibility Criteria: The scholarship is awarded to students who are required to pay tuition fees.
 
Eligible Countries: The scholarship program is available to applicants from two different categories of countries.
  • Category 1: This category includes following countries: Bangladesh, Mali, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Liberia, Myanmar, South Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Zambia 
  • Category 2: Applicants with nationality from the countries listed on the DAC list of ODA recipients (https://www.oecd.org/dac/financing-sustainable-development/) are eligible to apply to this scholarship program. Applicants from China, Algeria, India, Botswana, Egypt, Indonesia, Syria, Iran, South Africa, Iraq, Libya, Jordan, Morocco, Lebanon, Vietnam, Namibia, Yemen, Tunisia, the West Bank and Gaza are given the highest priority.
Scholarship Benefits: The scholarship includes both the tuition fee and living expenses that amounts to SEK 9,000 per month. Along with the scholarship, travel grant of SEK 15,000 and insurance coverage is given.

Scholarship Period: The scholarship is only given for the courses commencing in the autumn semester-August/September and is awarded for one academic year.

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for South African Students

The scholarship is for full-time master’s degree studies in Sweden and includes both living costs and tuition fees.

Eligibility: Applicants must be a South African national. Applicants who have completed bachelor’s course of studies from a South African university are given priority. The scholarships is for students who are required to pay tuition fees

Scholarship benefits: The scholarship includes both the tuition fee and living costs that amounts to SEK 9,000 per month. Along with the scholarship, travel grant of SEK 15,000 and insurance coverage is given.

Scholarships Period: The scholarship is given for the courses commencing only in the autumn semester-August/September. The scholarship is awarded for one academic year.

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for Syrian Students

The scholarship is for full-time master’s degree studies in Sweden and includes both living costs and tuition fees. About 15 scholarships are awarded for Syrian students on an annual basis for two years. 

Eligibility: Applicants must be students from Syria holding a bachelor’s degree from a Syrian university.

Scholarship Benefits: The scholarship covers both the study and living expenses that amounts to SEK 9,000 per month. Also, a travel grant of SEK 15,000 and an insurance coverage is given along with the scholarship. The Swedish State Group Insurance insures the scholarship holders against sickness and any accident during the duration of the scholarship.

Scholarship Period: The scholarship is only awarded for programmes commencing in the autumn semester- August/September and is granted for one academic year.

Swedish-Turkey Scholarship for Master’s Course of Study

The scholarship is for full-time master’s degree studies in Sweden and includes both living costs and tuition fees.

Eligibility: The scholarship is for students who have to pay the tuition fees. 

Eligible country: This Scholarship program is only open to applicants from Turkey.

Eligible programmes:  Programmes within the field of social science are only eligible.

Scholarship Benefits: The scholarship covers both the study and living expenses that amounts to SEK 9,000 per month. Also, a travel grant of SEK 5,000 and an insurance coverage is given along with the scholarship. The Swedish State Group Insurance insure the scholarship holders against sickness and accident during the scholarship period.

Scholarship Period: The scholarship is only awarded for programmes commencing in the autumn semester- August/September and is granted for two semesters. 

Swedish-Turkey Scholarship for PhD Studies and Post-doctoral Research

The Swedish-Turkey Scholarship program provides the students holding a PhD degree and post-doctoral researchers an opportunity to carry out research activities in Swedish universities and research institutes. 

Eligible Country: This Scholarship program is for applicants from Turkey.

Duration of scholarship: The scholarship is awarded for long-term visits of 6, 9 or 12 months.

Fields of research: This Scholarship is offered in following fields of study: Management, Human rights, Economics, Law, Social issues, and European Studies.

Scholarship benefits: The scholarship provides an insurance coverage and a grant of SEK 15,000 per month to PhD students as well as SEK 18,000 per month to post-doctoral researchers. 

Visby Programme for Master’s Level Studies

The Visby scholarship is for full-time master’s degree studies in Sweden and includes both living costs and tuition fees.

Countries of eligibility: Applicants from Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine are eligible to apply for Visby Programme.

Scholarship Benefits: The scholarship covers both the study and living expenses that amounts to SEK 9,000 per month. 
  • Travel grants: Scholarship holders get a travel grant along with the scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment and based upon the citizenship of the applicant. Applicants from Belarus, Ukraine and Russia receive a travel grant of SEK 4,000, while applicants from Georgia and Moldova receive a travel grant of SEK 5,000.
  • Insurance: The Swedish State Group Insurance insure the scholarship holders against sickness and accident during the scholarship period.
Scholarship Period: The scholarship is only awarded for programmes commencing in the autumn semester- August/September and is granted for one academic year. 

Visby Programme Scholarships for PhD Studies and Post-doctoral Research

Eligible Countries: Applicants from the following countries are eligible to apply for Visby scholarships for PhD studies and post-doctoral research: Moldova, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Georgia, and Russia. 

Target groups: The programme provides the students holding a PhD degree and post-doctoral researchers an opportunity to carry out research activities in Swedish higher education institutions in any domain or areas of study.
  • For PhD studies – There are two different types of applying process for the visby scholarship program. The first type is comprised of PhD students applying for a long-term visit, i.e. for six, nine or twelve months. The second type comprises of applicants applying for a scholarship program as per the sandwich model, i.e. a few short visits. The duration of the scholarship for applicants applying as per the sandwich structure is a maximum 12 months over three years, sub-divided into a maximum of two research visits for each year.
  • For Postdoctoral research – Applicants applying for a post-doctoral research long-term visit must possess a degree of doctor (PhD), ideally from 2009 or later.
  • Senior scientists – Applicants who possess a PhD degree but who do not fulfill the criteria for postdoctoral researchers, as stated above, can come to Sweden to carry out a research for a period of maximum 6 months.
Scholarship benefits: The scholarship provides a grant of SEK 15,000 per month to PhD students and SEK 18,000 per month to post-doctoral researchers.  

Insurance: The Swedish State Group Insurance insure the scholarship holders against sickness and accident during the scholarship period. The EU member states and other Convention countries citizens also get the insurance is but it has some limitations.

Scholarship limitations: The scholarship covers living costs for the scholarship holder only. 
  • The awarded scholarship period cannot be changed or extended
  • PhD students on a sandwich arrangement are allowed up to two visits per scholarship year.

Bicentennial Swedish-American Exchange Fund

Applicants who are the citizens or permanent residents of the United States are eligible to apply for the Bicentennial Swedish-American Exchange Fund. The fund provides an opportunity to people who are in a position to influence public views and contribute to the evolution of their society by doing a two to four week study trip to Sweden. It basically is for professional enhancement. It is not related to studies.

Fields of study: The scholarship program funds following fields: politics, working life, Natural and Physical environment, mass media, public administration, business and industry, education, and culture.

Scholarship benefits: The Bicentennial Fund gives a grant that amounts to SEK 30,000 each for two-to-four week study visits to Sweden. 

Applying Ways and Means: To apply for the fund, fill in the application form. Provide a detailed description of the project within the aforementioned fields of study to be undertaken in Sweden.

Report: Scholarship holders are required to submit a report to the Swedish Institute within one month after their study visit to Sweden.

Guest Scholarship Program

The Guest Scholarship Program provides an opportunity for researchers holding a PhD degree to carry out research at Swedish universities and research institutes. Following countries citizens are eligible for Guest Scholarship programs in Sweden: Kenya, Bangladesh, Mali, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia. 
The scholarship is awarded for long-term visits-6, 9 or 12 months. The scholarship of SEK 18,000 per month is given to the students. The scholarship program includes one travel grant that amounts to SEK 15,000 and also covers insurance cost.
